It seemed a little strange to forbid us from entering any of these sanctuaries. There were only 20-odd people (in both senses) in a corner of the world with no other humans and yet five of us were kept in the cold. Keeping us arbitrarily at arm’s length seemed another feature of the strange hierarchies and politics of a small community. It was even more unfriendly in this instance given that Paul, our guide and the fourth member of our party, had been to Patriot Hills twice before (even working for the organisation) and Patrick had also stayed there two years previously.
CHAPTER 4 Altered Reality What has brought them to the temple . . no single answer will cover . . escape from everyday life, with its painful crudity and hopeless dreariness, from the fetters of one’s own shifting desires. A finely tempered nature longs to escape from his noisy cramped surroundings into the silence of the high mountains where the eye ranges freely through the still pure air and fondly traces out the restful contours apparently built for eternity. Albert Einstein, 1918 That was two years ago.
With Patrick’s footage, photographs, charisma and enthusiasm we had a much better shot at persuading institutions to back us. Over the last few weeks it had become painfully apparent that I had a number of big hurdles in my way. It had all seemed to be a riddle with no solution: I was a novice; I wanted to go to Antarctica. Anything I desired to do and was capable of doing – just as an author feels anxiety of influence – seemed to have been done by somebody else. To have tried something new and exciting (which was itself a tall order) on my own without any prior expedition experience would have been too great a risk for most sponsors.
