The lubricating effect of the graphite particles produces a more mobile mortar which may result in slumping of the modules. Graphite is used, therefore, in situations where its chemical properties are needed, as application properties of the mortar are then sacrificed. Graphite or corundum filled mortars are extremely expensive due to the low filler contents and high material cost. This type of filler is used where necessary with epoxy, polyester and furane resins for bedding and jointing tiles or engineering brick.

1 (courtesy British Industrial Sand). For resin toppings and mortars, it is not feasible simply to buy bags of sand to formulate a mix even if it is of the correct nature, clean, dry and free from acid solubles. 1 showing the variety of classifications for sand particles, the more rounded the shape, the lower the surface area per unit volume than an angular sand particle of the same grading. The lower the surface area the wetter the mix in comparison with the same filler ratio of angular sand, as the coating surface for the resin is smaller and excess resin acts as a lubricant between particles.

The judicious selection of footwear where anti-slip finishes are required is complementary to its effectiveness. It may have been apparent from the traces that leather produces better anti-slip properties, but under normal circumstances leather soles are not practical in permanently wet or chemical spillage areas. Good quality rubber soled safety shoes, boots or wellingtons with profiled soles are normally recommended. 1 Sheet rubber flooring Vulcanized rubber sheeting, in the main anchored to substrates by latex screeds, has become increasingly popular in non-chemical environments, specifically in areas where heavy objects are dropped such as kegging plants and loading and unloading areas where the noise absorbing properties of the rubber can be put to good use.
