A method for defeating, denying or degrading someone's perceptual claim, then, is to assign to it the status of having been a function of mere 'belief'. Beliefs, then, are certainly invoked in accounting for discrepant perceptual claims of various kinds. But do beliefs enable us to set? things-in-common? I shall argue that the answer to this question is no. A belief, at least of a declarative or propositional kind, is a guarded claim about something. To say of myself or of someone else that 1/he 'believe(s)' that X, or in the existence of X, or something about X, is to refrain from espousing a knowledgeclaim.
