However, the Coleman study of ‘youth culture’ in ten middle-west high schools in the US, published in The Adolescent Society, had a particularly strong impact. Adolescence, when it started to become a field of systematic study, was, as we have seen, conceived as a stage when the young person is trying to come to grips with him- or herself and thereby comes into conflict with adult authorities and institutions. The young tend to turn from their parents and to their peers. Empirical studies show how they gradually turn away from ideals embodied by persons in their close proximity to remote ideals, often literary figures far away from the tangible reality surrounding them (Husén, 1944).
Yet, in a clique, associations between like-minded persons reflect assortative pairing on the basis of prior similarity as well as increased similarity as the result of socialization due to continued association, as was documented by Cohen (1983) twenty years later in his analysis of The Adolescent Society data and by my own work (Kandel, 1978; see also postscript below). The Adolescent Society exaggerated the influence of the school and of peers on the development of a young person’s values and activities.
I saw this research as a detour in my research direction, but I undertook it for a combination of two reasons: It offered an opportunity to demonstrate the value of social research for policy issues; and it provided the potential for contributing to increased equality of educational opportunity for black children. COLEMAN out, both of these possibilities were realized: the research helped create the mold into which much succeeding policy research in education has been cast; and the results were widely used in school desegregation policy over a period of years following its publication.
