The approved books are concocted according to the official world-view. Other more exciting reading, like comic books, does not contrast to life but withdraws from it, is without reality or feeling. The movies are the same more insidiously, because they are apparently adult and real. Finally, the ideal models of careers with their characters and philosophies -- scientist, explorer, nurse, and writer -- have been normalized to TV stereotypes: they are all the same Organization Man, though they wear various costumes.

Playthings are prefabricated toys; there is little practical carpentry, plumbing or mechanics; but there are do-it-yourself kits. The contrast of city and country vanishes in endless conurbation. Few children know animals. Even basic foods are packaged and distributed, and increasingly pre-cooked, in the official style. And a child hears less of any rival style or thought.
