Insects are extremely valuable to humans—without them, we could not exist. They are a fundamental part of the ecosystem. Insects are important for pollinating plants; decomposing organic materials; helping recycle carbon, nitrogen, and other nutrients; producing food (such as honey); and manufacturing useful products such as silk. All mammals share three characteristics not found in any other type of animals: They have three middle ear bones, they have hair, and they produce milk by modified sweat glands called mammary glands.

He proposed that based on an unusually large amount of a rare element called iridium found in the rocks between the Cretaceous and Tertiary periods. Iridium is extremely rare in the Earth’s crust, but is much more common in asteroids. If a large enough asteroid slammed into the Earth, it could have sent a huge shock wave around the globe—similar to a nuclear explosion—and the immense heat and winds would have caused widespread fires of global proportions. Earthquakes and huge tidal waves would have been significant; a cloud of vaporized water would have filled the atmosphere; and the cloud of debris could have caused global cooling, darkness, and acid rain.

Dating by molecular clock is based on changes in genetic makeup. Evolutionary biologists have been investigating the possibility that some evolutionary changes occur at a regular, predictable rate over Evolution, adaptation, and extinction through time A dinosaur skeleton provides evidence of past life. By reconstructing skeletal remains, paleontologists can fit together pieces of the past and gain a better understanding of what types of animal life existed on Earth.
